Combining world-class museums, a booming French community and a lot of stunning architecture, South Kensington can sometimes feel like a miniature Paris in the heart of West London. With the buttery croissants of Bute Street and top Lycée schools it is clear France has had an effect on the local restaurants, which have been upping their game and revamping menus ever since.

Summer in South Ken can feel a little empty as residents flee London for the South of France, but don’t think there isn’t enough to keep you entertained for a ‘staycation’ – the Museum District is living up to its name with plenty of exciting new exhibitions, BBC Proms in the Park is on the way, and there are plenty of bars and restaurants waiting to be tried.

Take time this July and August to visit all the nearby attractions you always intended to visit but never made it to, such as the Museum of Brands, the chic French Cine Lumiere and the spooky-yet-beautiful Brompton Cemetery, before everyone else comes back and clogs up the queues!

Museum of Brands, Packaging and Advertising

One of London’s most unique and fascinating museums, the Museum of Brands, Packaging and Advertising explores the history of consumer culture over the last few centuries, beginning with Victorian products, posters and everyday items and travelling through time to the present day. While tracing the history of advertising they also reflect on the effect of female emancipation, two world wars and changes in transportation, media and shopping habits. You’ll never look at a branded box of cereal the same way again!

Cine Lumiere

Part of the Institut Français, Cine Lumiere is dedicated to bringing fine French and Francophone films to the UK. With a cool Art Deco interior and a screening list packed with new releases and classics, give the local Odeon a miss and embrace the arthouse world of French cinema instead.

Diana Memorial Playground

Created in 2000 in memory of the late Diana, Princess of Wales, the Memorial Playground in Kensington Gardens is a brilliant and imaginative place of children to play and explore. With a giant pirate ship in the centre, a sensory trail, teepes, a beach and even an area for less able-bodied children, it’s the perfect place to take the kids on a sunny afternoon.

One of London’s ‘Magnificent Seven’, it’s a Grade I listed Victorian site full of historic monuments, wildlife, trees and plenty of stories about the interesting people buried here. Take the time to explore yourself, or sign up for one of the many guided tours to get the whole story.
