Since the days of Henry VIII and his many wives, Chelsea has been a very popular pocket of South West London, with plenty of aristocrats and royal figures building palaces and grand buildings here during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries.

While the Queen may have moved on to Buckingham Palace since then, Chelsea is still considered to be one of the most prime spots in the city due to the pretty houses, exclusive designer shops, and lovely green spots for lazing in the sunny summer months. Although the SW1 postcode means that the amenities and attractions of Central London are a very short ride away, lucky Chelsea residents needn’t even bother with the packed, sweaty tube when there’s so much to offer on their doorstep this season. Read our top recommendations for eating, drinking, and enjoying yourself this summer in Chelsea!

Chelsea boasts an array of diverse attractions all year round, but with the Serpentine Lido nearby for an al-fresco swim, a zoo full of amazing animals across the river and the chance to picnic with luxury goodies from Partridges, summer is when the area really blossoms. Who needs to leave London when you’ve got all this on your doorstep?

Serpentine Lido

When the mercury hits 30C, there’s no better place to seek refuge than Serpentine Lido, which was created in the 1930s from a cornered-off area of the Serpentine Lake. It’s open every day from June until September, and there’s even a cafe so you can enjoy an ice cream following a refreshing dip in the cool waters.

Partridges

Forget about Tesco, Sainsburys or even Waitrose, if you’re looking for a fancy supermarket and some gourmet ingredients in Chelsea, head straight to Partridges on Duke of York Square. Granted Royal Warrant by the Queen in 1994 (meaning they supply groceries to Buckingham Palace!), Partridges has an amazing range of fresh foods, hard-to-get ingredients and plenty of international items for homesick Americans looking for Skippy’s Peanut Butter. Stock up here then head to the park for the most deluxe picnic ever!
