The original London suburb, St John’s Wood has gone from being out in the sticks at the beginning of the 19th century to the heart of North West London as our fair capital continues to sprawl outwards. Fortunately, despite now being easily accessible from central London, NW8 retains a close village feel and sense of privacy which have caused everyone from Hollywood celebs to members of the glittering litterati to flock here.

It’s a top spot all year round but St John’s Wood really shines during the summer, with Regent’s Park nearby, great restaurants and pubs with al-fresco dining terraces and plenty of cultural activities to keep the local intellectuals stimulated until September at least. Grab your sunglasses and go get involved!

Food, wine and good times are easy to come by here, as independent boutiques such as The Winery and Panzers keep the neighbourhood stocked full of delicious dishes and quality wines, while classes at Triyoga will keep you fitting into your summer clothes after a few too many gluttonous dinner parties.

Ben Uri Gallery

Part of the London Jewish Museum of Art, the respected Ben Uri Gallery in St John’s Wood is dedicated to showcasing the work of artists of European Jewish descent from the 19th century to the present day. Along with an excellent permanent collection, they’re opening a special retrospective this July to mark the 100th anniversary of the foundation of the Ben Uri Art Society.

St Johns Wood Church Grounds

Formerly the graveyard for St John’s Wood Church, this pretty green spot is now a public park perfect for weekend picnics. It also has a rather fascinating history if you’re a fan of mysteries, being home to the grave of West Country prophetess Joanna Southcott, who left behind a box of prophecies following her death in 1814 which has never been found. Spooky!
