Residential Land was proud to support the amazing Rickshav Race Travels to my Elephant. Travels to my Elephant is inspired by Elephant Family’s late founder and passionate  conservationist, Mark Shand, and his best-selling book, Travels on my Elephant. The aim of the adventure was to raise £1 million to support the work of The Elephant Family and in fact to date they have collectively raised well over £1.5M.

To find out how they got on, read their fascinating blog below:

We have returned from our truly amazing rickshaw journey through Madhya Pradesh in India. It was an incredible experience and slightly surreal! We saw beautiful countryside and received a wonderful warm welcome from the local villagers, with people lining the streets to wave at us all go past.   At times it was quite hair-raising and the whole thing was certainly more of an adventure than we had anticipated!

There were 42 teams of two  covering 500 km and we ended up at the home of Tara the elephant who was rescued by the late and great Mark Shand.  It was Tara who inspired Mark to set up The Elephant Family Charity, raising money not only to protect the Asian elephant but also to protect and support the local farmers from the extensive damage that elephants can do.

The Elephant Family works on schemes to create elephant corridors and to rehouse villagers along these routes.   Each year over 400 people are killed by elephants that are desperately hunting for food and migrating through parts of India – the elephant corridors will go a long way towards preventing these deaths. Over the last 100 years 90% of the world’s Asian elephant population has disappeared and in another 30 years they could easily vanish altogether unless the work is done to ensure that man and beast can live alongside each other.”
