When you travel on business it’s more or less impossible to feel like you’re at home. You’re trapped in a netherworld of tiny soaps and re-laundered towels, returning to rooms that have magically restored themselves to characterless order while your back was turned. Forget to hang a Do Not Disturb sign and you’ll find yourself being woken up to the sound of a hoover at the end of your bed.

That’s how I was living – in property purgatory, and quick on the draw with door handle-based room service instructions. As a roving consultant with an international IT solutions company, I was in London overseeing the implementation of a cutting-edge asset management system for a major UK supermarket chain. Thrilling, I know. Maybe I’ll tell you about it some time.

But it was a big job. A half-a-year job, minimum. And if there’s anything worse than spending days at a time in a string of interchangeable hotels, it’s spending months at a time in a single interchangeable hotel. I was two drinks at the downstairs bar away from kidnapping the doorman with a weaponised cocktail umbrella and reeling off a list of home comfort-themed demands.

And that’s when my good friend Michael told me about Residential Land.

I’d seen Michael’s place before, when I’d been over from Seattle on flying visits. He lives on Duke Street, in the heart of Mayfair, and his apartment made me immediately envious. The intricate masonry decorating the building’s entrance spoke of historic London, yet ushered me into a world of warmth and utterly modern convenience. His high-ceilinged home sang with style and the Crestron Home Automation system subtly embedded into its surfaces.

It was at this point that I needed a place to call my own – my hotel days were over.

It proved exceptionally easy. I rang Resi Land and told them what I was looking for. I wanted a bit further out than Mayfair – closer to work – and we settled on Merchant Square in Paddington – a peaceful block overlooking the Paddington Basin area of the Grand Union canal. The perfect place to relax.

I assumed I’d have to wait to get moved in while I compared the prices of various removal men and signed off on a tornado of a bureaucracy. Wrong again. Residential Land were ready to move me in within 24 hours of me agreeing to my tenancy, with the help of the excellent removal guys they’ve partnered with.

I’d also assumed that once everything was signed off and I’d been smoothly installed in my new home, that would be the end of it – I’d be forgotten about. Couldn’t be further from the truth. The Residential Land service is ever-present – most obviously in the form of building manager Gary. Whether it’s providing recommendations in the local area or sorting out anything to the running of the building – every query I’ve ever had has been promptly taken care of by Gary.

It has been straightforward, stress-free bliss – luxuriating in all of the comforts of a home, but with even more of a bespoke service than a high-end hotel.
