When it comes to statement pieces, this chandelier tops them all. Part kinetic sea-creature, part dazzling light show, this huge light sculpture responds to the movement of those around it. Like a conductor to a silent orchestra, when you open your arms out wide and downwards, the chandelier gently unfurls, the light refracting through the individual glass pieces to create coruscating light patterns.

“Bohemian glass became world famous for its calibre and colour during the Renaissance period.”

The chandelier is called Supernova and is designed by Petra Krausová for established high-end Czech glass manufacturer Lasvit.

Krausová says, “I was inspired by the universe itself because in the universe everything is in motion.”

Taking up a spherical space of approximately 4 meters in diameter, Supernova weighs just over 2.5 tonnes. Each of its many intricate glass elements is hand-blown and attached to one of 11 different circuits controlled by 22 individual 3-phase servomotors. By measuring the light hitting the chandelier, the motors are able to respond to the movement of those viewing it by rearranging the glass elements.

Unless you live in a mansion or you own a hotel, of course, this chandelier probably won’t fit in your home. Lasvit, however, does also do more practical, though still no less beautiful high-end glass products.

Founded in 2007 Lasvit collaborates with a wide range of internal and external designers who push the envelope of modern lighting, combining cutting edge creativity and technology with centuries of expertise.

The Czech Republic has a proud history of glasswork, with glass-making sites dating back to 1250 having been excavated in the Lusatian Mountains. At that time, the area was known as Bohemia. Today, the renownedly high quality, expertly-crafted glassware produced in the Czech Republic remains known as Bohemian glass.

Bohemian glass became world famous for its calibre and colour during the Renaissance period, and by the 18th Century was highly sought-after as jewellery by aristocrats (and anyone else who could afford it). Czech-produced crystal chandeliers hung from ceilings in the palaces of King Louis XV of France, Empress Maria Theresa of Austria and Empress Elizabeth of Russia.

Lasvit has proudly and unapologetically taken this fine tradition into the 21st Century. To find out more about Lasvit’s collections and where to buy a piece click here.
