History of Ravenscourt Park

Almost all of Ravenscourt Park's history stems from the eponymous park. The original medieval manor was recorded as far back as the 12th century and was part of the estate known as Palingswick (or Paddenswick). The lake you see today was once part of the moat that surrounded the manor house, being fed by the Stamford Brook.

During the 14th century, the manor was lived in my King Edward III's mistress, Alice Perrers, although the house was sold in 1747 to Thomas Corbett, who renamed the residence Ravenscourt. The manor house's final owner was probably its most influential. Private owner George Scott employed renowned landscape architect Humphry Repton to lay out the gardens of the estate and also encouraged the building of houses along the park's edges. The original 78 houses soon swelled and by 1845, this number had risen to 330. The park was only opened to the public as late as 1888. The manor house was sadly destroyed in the bombings of WWII, with only the stables remaining, which are now the park's tea rooms.
