History of Canary Wharf

Already in the 1500’s, London’s ports were bustling with trade. The Docklands served as a point of departure for a large number of merchant ventures. In the 1800’s the West India Docks opened and were widely regarded as one of England’s most impressive civil engineering structures. The Docklands were badly bombed during the Second World War in the 1940’s. In the 1970’s there was significant disinvestment in the Docklands, and many of the docks closed. Thereafter, the “New Docklands” came into being in the 1980’s.

Canary Wharf itself is named after the quay where the fruit and vegetables which had been shipped in from the Mediterranean and Canary Islands would be unloaded. Canadian real estate entrepreneur Paul Reichmann was the creator of Canary Wharf. However, the notion of an office complex being built up in the area originated from the American bankers Michal von Clemm and G Ware Travelstead. Michael Heseltine, Margaret Thatcher’s environment secretary, set up the London Docklands Development Corporation with the local Government Planning and Land Act 1980. The site was turned into a financial district after 1987 and collaboration began with Reichmann. Construction began in 1988 and the area continued to develop throughout the 1990’s and 2000’s. Since 2014 Canary Wharf has been expanding towards the east, with plans for more future construction in the pipeline. It is now home to world-leading financial institutions and corporations whose impressive high-rise office buildings shine bright in the area.
