History of Edgware Road

Edgware Road as we currently know it, has existed since before Roman times when it was used as an ancient track way through the Great Middlesex Forest. The Romans later incorporated it into Watling Street which is how it remained for many centuries, until, in 1711, the Edgware-Kilburn turnpike trust began work to improve the track. They built a number of the local inns which functioned as a stop for coaches and some of these can still be seen as you travel along the modern road.

By 1811, Thomas Telford had produced yet another re-design for the road which was by then known as the section of the London to Holyhead road. This new design was considered to be one of the most important feats of pre-Victorian engineering.
